Keeping sensitive information safe—even after it hits the trash.

SAINT PAUL,MINNESOTA — As security concerns about the disposal of sensitive consumer and employee data continue to keep local businesses on alert, Shred Right, a St. Paul shredding solutions company, has been certified by the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID). NAID Certifications means that Shred Right has submitted to a close examination of every aspect of its security process and has met or exceeded every requirement. NAID is a nonprofit international trade association formed in 1993 for and of companies that offer document destruction services. With hundreds of members throughout North America, NAID has become the recognized authority on secure information destruction.

The NAID Certification Program establishes standards for employee hiring and screening, operations, the destruction process, and insurance as well as other security factors. Auditing criteria includes:

  • The quality of the physical security at the facility
  • Employee screening
  • Compliance to written policies and procedures
  • Timely material destruction
  • Quality of destruction and destruction equipment

NAID certification is a voluntary annual program that is audited by security professionals with the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) accreditation. The CPP accreditation is issued by the American Society for Industrial Security.

"NAID certification was the next logical step to illustrate to our customers that we take every security precaution with their sensitive information," stated Ron Mason, owner of Shred Right. "We've already developed a facility and a process which is second to none. NAID certification is just a way to formally recognize the efforts we have made."

Shred Right recently completed upgrading its St. Paul operations in the latter part of 2004, investing more than $1 million in industry-leading technology and facility upgrades. With improvements like a computerized secure chain of custody, online viewing and the industry's only secure "Shredding Vault," the Shred Right high-security facility exceeds the rigorous AAA-standards established by NAID.

"The recent Federal Trade Commission FACT Act Disposal Rule law has brought a new level of scrutiny to what we do," Mason said. "And the growing list of laws and regulations emphasize a company's responsibility to make careful decisions about how sensitive information is handledÑand who handles it."

Mason continued, "The NAID certification quickly demonstrates to our customers that Shred Right will handle their needs with care, diligence and respect for the law."

About The FACT Act Disposal Rule
The new FACT Act Disposal Rule, issued by The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in November, 2004, broadly covers "any record about an individual, whether in paper, electronic, or other form that is a consumer report (also known as a credit report) or is derived from a consumer report." It requires any person or company that possesses or maintains such information to take "reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access to or use of the information in connection with its disposal." The rule is one of several new requirements intended to combat consumer fraud and identity theft and protect privacy required by the federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act), which was enacted in December 2003.
